The second moments of an area, or rectangular moments of inertia,
of an area with respect to the x and y axes - shown in the figure
above - are defined as

In this course, the cross-sectional areas consist of simple geometric shapes,
therefore, their moments of inertia can be calculated by a simple summation as
opposed to the integral equations shown. More about this later!
