Welcome to the home of the Mississippi State University August Raspet Chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)!
The August Raspet student chapter has over 150 members and coordinates closely with the Mississippi State University Department of Aerospace Engineering. AIAA at MSU is open to all students who have an interest in aeronautics or astronautics. See the national AIAA website for more information concerning the mission and activities of the professional organization. This website also provides details regarding: student conferences, scholarships, and design competitions.
In 1949, August "Gus" Raspet was hired by Mississippi State College to establish a research program in aerophysics. His work on boundary layers and other viscous flows led to discoveries that helped improve understanding of transitional flow and its application to gliding and general aviation aircraft. Our AIAA chapter is named in honor of this man. He is remembered to this day by aerospace minds the world over. So much so, that an award is given every year in his name every year at EAA-Oshkosh. If you're interested in more information on August Raspet and his contributions to the aerospace sciences and to Mississippi State University, this information can be found at the August Raspet History site. Our historic flight test labs at Mississippi State are also named in his honor.
A more general history of aerospace engineering and our university's place in it was written by our own David H. Bridges, Ph.D.. The PDF can be found here: Of Aeronautics, Aerophysics, and Aerospace: A History of Aerospace Engineering at Mississippi State University.
Every year in the spring, the AIAA Region II Student Conference gathers students from universities all over the southeast United States to compete in aerospace-related essays and presentations. There are also fun activities to do when not presenting, such as distinguished speakers and tours of famous facilities. Pictures from the last conference can be found on the chapter Facebook page.
